Every year around the Holidays, like many, I get waves of deep nostalgia. Little flashbacks and reminders of my own childhood - remembering it all like no time has passed, and wishing time would move just a little bit slower. I think about my mom around this time, a lot. Her effortless yet intentional approach to everything: what she wore, what she cooked, her tablescapes, her needlepoint shoes and personalized Christmas stockings. How all of the magic and joy I felt as a child around the holidays, was from her. I think about what all could have been, while being so incredibly grateful for what was and what is. I think about how I can possibly emulate what she created for us, for my kids.
In a time of endless inspiration on the internet - home decor collages, gift guides, cyber sales, homepages - I find myself deep in photo boxes looking for inspiration from her. Squinting my eyes to see what was being served on the dining room table in the background of a photo or what bag she was wearing over her shoulder. She created that magic in everything she did, particularly her style…sigh, her style. Memories of her flash into my mind as I grab a sweater in my closet - how would she wear it? How would she style it? What I would give to be able to ask her. But, the first question I have always and will always ask myself, for everything, is: “How would she do it?” And then the whispers come through, and I have to believe it’s her.
She is my forever influencer, my inspiration always. So join me on a dig through the photo boxes, and how I attempt to recreate her timeless magic.
